Register to Vote by Feb. 5

This article appeared in a January 2018 issue of the student newsletter.

Do you care about Pell Grants? Are you interested in lowering the cost of college? Do you have an opinion regarding DACA?

Do you want to change laws that impact students?

The first step to be heard in Washington, D.C. (federal level), Austin (state level) or at city hall (local level) is to register to vote.

State Election Dates and Deadlines

Registering to vote is the first step to having a voice at all levels of government. And your chance to get in on the action ends in two short weeks: Feb. 5, 2018. That is the first of many key dates for the Texas Primary Election.

Texas Primary Election dates and deadlines:

  • Feb. 5: Last Day to Register to Vote
  • Feb. 20: Early Voting Begins
  • March 2: Early Voting Ends
  • March 6: Texas Primaries

About the Texas Primary Election

There are many good reasons to vote:

  1. Voting is your civic duty.
  2. People fought for your right to vote.
  3. If you don't vote, you don't get to complain about how things turn out.

But perhaps the best reason to vote is selfish: Voting can help you get what you want.

Texas' primary election is used by political parties to determine which candidates will run on our general election ballot on Nov. 6, 2018 (for partisan offices). The primary election focuses on legislative seats along with U.S. senators and representatives, the governor and statewide officials.

These are the people representing you. Choose wisely!
