Welcome from the Chairs

The Literacy Link chairs, Samantha Schulze and Joselyn Gonzalez welcome you to  El Centro College’s common book program. Each year, topics from a single, carefully selected book for students are featured in disciplines across the college, and in special events and presentations. Having a shared source for such topics provides a common ground for students and their professors, and stimulates discussions and learning.  The same topics also lend themselves to presentations in a lecture series, and to discussions between students and faculty within and beyond classrooms.

Our goal is that students engage in an intellectual and community-building activity that introduces them to the college experience. All El Centro students are provided a book to read through various book distribution locations on campus, including the West campus of El Centro and the Bill J. Priest Institute.

Throughout the semester, students participate in discussions of the book and related issues; the discussions are facilitated by faculty, staff, and the community. We also encourage faculty and staff to incorporate themes and ideas from the Common Book in their courses and programs.
