  • The Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting provides recognition for the quality of the education system to the public and accredits El Centro’s Surgical Technology program.
  • The Association of Surgical Technologists is a national organization representing more than 55,000 surgical technologists and surgical assistants that is actively involved in legislative efforts for the field of surgical technology, both at state and national levels. Established in 1969, AST is governed by an 11-member board of directors.
  • The Foundation for Surgical Technology funds educational, professional and community programs and gives scholarships to students. FST was founded in 1997 with a mission to enhance the profession by offering support through scholarships to students and current practitioners who wish to advance their education or participate in medical mission projects.

    In 2006, FST recognized 14 students from across the country for their academic merit and personal goals. Approximately $12,000 was awarded in varying amounts to these future professionals. In addition, one practitioner received $2,000 to assist in the costs of earning a bachelor’s degree.
  • Health Occupations Students of America is a national student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of the Association of Career and Technical Education. Founded in 1976, HOSA numbers nearly 90,000 members through 44 chartered state associations. It had approximately 2,600 secondary and postsecondary/collegiate chapters in 2007-2008.
  • The National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting was established in 1974 as the certifying agency for surgical technologists. NBSTSA is solely responsible for all decisions regarding certification, from determining eligibility to maintaining, denying, granting and renewing the designation.
