Brenda Carlson

​Brenda Carlson has served as the Fashion Design program coordinator since 2012. She teaches classes in patternmaking, collection design, sketching, tailoring, introduction to mass production, and special topics in fashion design and illustration. She also serves as advisor to the Fashion Society Club, coordinating an annual student fashion show and arranging guest speakers, field trips and opportunities with the local fashion industry for student enrichment.

Her almost 30 years of industry experience in both Dallas and Los Angeles includes working as business owner, designer, product developer and sales representative, including:

  • Designing, prototyping and providing technical specifications for clothing lines
  • Coordinating production between overseas factories and line production in the U.S.
  • Initiating new styles with patternmakers, cutters and sewing operators
  • Creating and merchandising seasonal lines
  • Fabric sourcing, pattern making, fitting and producing first samples
  • Managing employees in design, sales, production and customer service

She has worked for a number of prestigious area manufacturers and retailers, including Harold’s; Brighton Collectibles; Karen Kane; Gotcha Covered; F.L. Malik; Lucia Lukken; Units; Ginnie Johansen Designs; and Victor Costa. Early experience in Minnesota included working as a sales representative for the McCall Pattern Company and as assistant manager of new designs with the Sharpe Manufacturing Company.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in fashion design from the University of Minnesota with minors in textiles and dance and is a member of Fashion Group International.
