Why are we doing a "Day of Service"?

In 2011, the celebration of Conference Day will be very different. Chancellor Lassiter and the college presidents have decided that all of DCCCD locations will take part in a "Day of Service" to celebrate the district´┐Żs 45th anniversary. February 18, 2011 is the day that all of DCCCD locations will be giving back to the community by hosting a "Day of Service."

Each college will have a group of representatives that will identify non-profit charitable organizations that are in need of our help. These organizations will be within the campus service area. No classes will be held on February 18. However, this is still a working day. All staff members are encouraged to volunteer for a minimum of six hours. Those who do not wish to participate will need to submit a leave form in advance.

El Centro College will offer its employees a variety of volunteer opportunities from which to select in order to serve their community; these opportunities will be sponsored by 504.c.3 agencies whose purpose is nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonreligious. Employees may continue their own existing volunteer commitments as well with Dallas County agencies whose purpose is nonprofit, nonpolitical, and nonreligious.

Does attending a lecture or presentation count for my hours?

No. You must be actively volunteering for a community organization. Contact your location representative for more information.

Where can I volunteer?

A list of non-profit organizations will be available soon.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The District will follow the standard inclement weather policy.

What if I can't or don't want to attend?

You are not required to attend, but you will have to file the appropriate leave form with your location's Human Resources office if you are unable to or do not want to attend. That could be sick leave or extenuating circumstances for any full-time employee; vacation for any PSS or administrative employee.

Are DCCCD locations open during Day of Service?

No. All locations will be closed.

How many hours do I need to volunteer?

You are expected to volunteer for a minimum of six hours.

Employees can decide if they want to participate in the campus chosen organization or employees have the option to choose the organization of their choice. If employees decide to choose their own organization, they need to follow the guidelines below:

  • The organization must be non-profit
  • The volunteer service must occur on Friday, February 18, 2011
  • Employee must provide the organization name and other requested information at the time of registration

Do I have to turn in anything after I volunteer?

More details coming soon.

Are part-time employees participating? If so, will they be paid for their hours?

Part-time employees can participate if they like, however they will not be paid.
