Academic Suspension/Probation Program

The Academic Suspension/Probation program is a requirement of all students at El Centro College with a GPA (1) below a 2.0.  This program is designed to assist students in achieving academic success and assist in returning to good academic standing.  Upon completion of the program students should be able to apply appropriate strategies and techniques based on a well-developed Student Success Plan.

Guidelines for Students on Academic Probation

Requirements:
 
  • May be required to attend a Probation Planning Workshop
  • Must register for courses at workshop
  • May be assigned specific Academic Probation Advisor
Probation workshops include information on how to be a successful student at ECC as well as preparation for developing a personal academic plan, learn about college expectations to return to good academic standing.
Conditions required after student returns from Academic Suspension

Requirements:
 
  • Must petition for readmission to school
  • Must complete Academic Probation Contract
  • Must register for HDEV 0100 course
  • Must pass HDEV 0100 course with "C" or better
  • Must meet with Academic Probation Advisor 3 times within the semester
  • Must complete five visits to the Learning Center
  • Must complete Student Success Plan
  • Must register, add, or drop courses with Academic Probation Advisor
  • Credit hours will be limited
  • Attend Success Skills Workshops
  • Must complete semester with a GPA (1) of at least 2.0

  • Must petition for readmission to school

Students on Suspension, Dismissal or Indefinite Dismissal

Students on Academic Suspension, Dismissal, or Indefinite Dismissal, with a GPA less than a 2.0 are required to petition for readmission.

Students on Probation, Suspension, Dismissal and Indefinite Dismissal must meet the petition and registration deadline date.

Petition and Registration deadline dates:

  • Spring 2014: Saturday, January 11 (classes begin Tuesday, January 21)
  • Summer I 2014: Friday, May 30 (classes begin Wednesday, June 4)
  • Summer II 2014: Thursday, July 3 (classes begin Wednesday, July 90)
  • Fall 2014: Saturday, August 16 (classes begin Monday, August 25)
*Tuition must be received by payment due date.
 

***Students on probation, suspension or dismissal are not eligible to petition or register past the deadline date.

New Transfer Students with less than 2.0 GPA
Transfer students with less than a 2.0 cumulative GPA will enter El Centro College under their former academic standing and will be required to adhere to all El Centro College academic standing policies.

Students on Suspension or Academic Dismissal from another institution may have their academic history reviewed for admission based on campus requirements.

If you are on academic suspension or academic dismissal from another institution, you are ineligible for registration at the college unless you have met the academic standards required by the college. All transcripts are required prior to registration.

Academic Standings

Academic Probation

A student on academic probation may be required to sign a contract and total number of credit hours limited. Extended registration is not available for students on any level of probation, or those with a GPA (1) below 2.0. Students will be served on a first come, first served basis and must be signed in 30 minutes prior to closing.

Probation 1

Students on Early Alert who fail to complete at least one credit course with a grade of "C" or higher in their next semester of enrollment are placed on Probation 1 regardless of their cumulative GPA (1). Students who fail to earn a GPA (1) of 2.0 are also placed on Probation 1. Students on Probation 1 must complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/session GPA (1) of at least 2.0. Students will remain on Probation 1 until their cumulative GPA (1) is 2.0 or higher.

Suspension

Students on Probation 1 will be placed on Suspension if they fail to complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/session GPA of at least 2.0. Students on Suspension are not eligible to enroll in credit courses in the next subsequent session of enrollment (Fall Semester, Spring Semester or Summer Session).

Probation 2

Students readmitted after Suspension will be placed on Probation 2. Students on Probation 2 are required to sign a contract, may have total number of credit hours limited and may be required to register for specific courses. Students on Probation 2 must complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/session GPA of at least 2.0. Students will remain on Probation 2 until their cumulative GPA (1) is 2.0 or higher. Students on Probation 2 will have an Advisement Block placed on their academic record and are required to meet with their assigned advisor to register, add and/or drop courses.

Academic Dismissal

Students on Probation 2 will be placed on Academic Dismissal if they fail to complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/term GPA of at least 2.0. Students on Academic Dismissal are not eligible to enroll in credit courses for a period of 12 months.

Probation 3

Students readmitted after Dismissal will be placed on Probation 3. Students on Probation 3 are required to sign a contract, may have total number of credit hours limited and may be required to register for specific courses. Students on Probation 3 must complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/session GPA of at least 2.0. Students will remain on Probation 3 until their cumulative GPA (1) is 2.0 or higher. Students on Probation 3 will have an Advisement Block placed on their academic record and are required to meet with their assigned advisor to register, add and/or drop courses.

Indefinite Academic Dismissal

Students on Probation 3 will be placed on Indefinite Academic Dismissal if they fail to complete at least one credit course in their next semester/session of enrollment and earn a semester/term GPA of at least 2.0. Students on Indefinite Academic Dismissal are not eligible to enroll for 12 months.

It is the student's responsibility to understand and comply with the college's academic standards and procedures of the institution. Students are also responsible for checking/verifying their academic standing. This may be done through the student’s e-connect account.

Students who wish to petition for readmission must:
Submit the following Petition for Readmission form and return it to the Counseling & Advisement Center located at 801 Main Street 1st floor, room A110 or fax petition to 214-860-2649 before the deadline.
