A collaborative relationship with the local school district is optimal for a successful project. The Dallas Independent School District’s (DISD) administrative staff invited us to meetings with their ABE program staff to present the project and to establish a referral process for GED students. Feedback from GED instructors included statements such as “ This type of transition to college activity is long overdue”. One of the GED sites located in a One Stop Center took a field trip to the college campus.
The Dallas Urban League partnered with us by making their facility available to recruit GED students. In addition, we used their site to teach a health career course titled Wellness and Health Promotion. The class met twice a week in the evening for two hours for a total of 32 hours. The League recognizes the importance of assisting GED students with transitioning to college and has made a commitment to continue our partnership in the future.
