Nesting keeps concepts that are alike together.

The search engine search for the keywords in the parentheses first.

• alcohol AND (adolescents OR teenagers)
• (cats OR dogs) AND allerg*
• (colleges OR universities) AND education
• (drinking OR alcohol) AND driving

The first example will retrieve records on BOTH alcohol and adolescents and alcohol and teenagers.
