Next Step

Program Description

Next Step classes are specifically designed for students with developmental disabilities. Courses are intended to prepare students for work by teaching interpersonal skills, basic work-related academic and computer skills, and work readiness skills, such as how to get and keep a job. Classes span two-semester periods and have been shown to greatly improve work readiness and basic job skills.

The Next Step program targets the following:
  • Transportation - helping improve student ability to utilize transportation.
  • Socially appropriate behavior skills training
  • Daily living skills
  • Communication Skills
  • Grooming
  • Problem Solving
  • Goal Setting
  • Time Management
  • Self Concept/Self motivational skills training
  • Banking, Financial/Money Management
  • Work Traits/Work ethics
  • Conflict resolution - anger management
  • Disability awareness

Course Requirements

Functional reading skills at a second grade level and an interview with the program director are prerequisite for admittance into the program. Students must sign up for both Work Readiness and Beginning Computers/Office Skills on the same days. Students must take both classes concurrently, since they integrate concepts.
