Industrial Maintenance as a Career
Industrial maintenance mechanics may work in a variety of industries. Some of the top paying industries include computer systems design; aerospace product and parts manufacturing; air transportation support; scientific research and development services; and electric power generation, transmission, and distribution. Most commonly, however, they work in commercial and industrial machinery and equipment repair and maintenance within manufacturing.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage for industrial maintenance mechanics is $22.25/hourly or $46,270/annually. The pay is often on a hourly basis and overtime is readily available for those who wish to gain extra earnings. Overall, experience, education, and specialization give mechanics the opportunity to make extra income!
Job Outlook
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 20-28% national growth rate (faster than average) for industrial maintenance mechanics with a projected 117,100 jobs opening over the next ten years.
Many opportunities are available as an increase in retired industrial maintenance mechanics creates a shortage of qualified individuals. Increased adoption of sophisticated manufacturing machinery will require more highly skilled mechanics to keep the machines in good working order. Also, a growing emphasis on environmentally conscious enterprises and development of new green technologies will create new opportunities. This may include the maintenance and installation of machinery and equipment used for the development of alternative energy sources, windmills, and solar panels. In addition, job growth in other industries, such as, oil and gas, are anticipated to create many new opportunities for industrial maintenance mechanics.
