HESI Entrance Exam

Assessing Basic Academic Skills to Succeed in the Health Occupations Nursing Programs

Who takes the HESI exam? Students applying for:
  • Associate Degree Nursing
  • LVN to RN Advanced Placement "Bridge"
  • Diagnostic Medical Sonography
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) - more information on MRI
  • Echocardiology
  • Radiography
  • Invasive Cardiovascular Technology

What subjects are students tested over?
  • Grammar (50 items/50 minutes)
  • Reading Comprehension (38 items/50 minutes)
  • Vocabulary and General Knowledge (50 items/50 minutes)
  • Math (50 items/50 minutes)
  • Anatomy & Physiology (25 items/25 minutes)

When can a student take the HESI-A2 exam?
  • When making application to the Health Occupations programs
  • Recommended that the following course be taken first:
    • ENGL 1301 - English Composition I
    • MATH 1314 - College Algebra
    • BIOL 2401 or SCIT 1407 - Anatomy & Physiology I

When are the scores available?
  • Scores are available immediately
  • Assessment Center will provide UNofficial copies to students
  • Scores can be emailed to students
  • Scores can be retrieved online by Health Occupations

If a student does not pass ALL sections of the test on the initial attempt, then the student can repeat the entire test again. All other "retakes" must be taken at another District campus. We offer retest for students who have initially tested at other District campuses.

What else should I know?
  • the cost of the test is $25.00 payable at the Business Office at the institution where the exam is taken.
  • scores are good for 2 years
  • schedule an appointment in person at the Assessment Center by bringing a referral form (available online) and a paid receipt.
  • there is a waiting period for re-takes (see Assessment personnel).
  • it is a timed exam.
  • bring a valid photo ID.
