Collaboration with Community Partners

A collaborative relationship with the local school district is optimal for a successful project. The Dallas Independent School District’s (DISD) administrative staff invited us to meetings with their ABE program staff to present the project and to establish a referral process for GED students. Feedback from GED instructors included statements such as “ This type of transition to college activity is long overdue”. One of the GED sites located in a One Stop Center took a field trip to the college campus. See a newsletter article about their trip that appeared in DISD Connections newsletter.

The Dallas Urban League partnered with us by making their facility available to recruit GED students. In addition, we used their site to teach a health career course titled Wellness and Health Promotion. The class met twice a week in the evening for two hours for a total of 32 hours. The League recognizes the importance of assisting GED students with transitioning to college and has made a commitment to continue our partnership in the future.
