| CAREER DESCRIPTION | ||
The echocardiographer uses sound waves to create an image of the heart.
Echocardiology is a highly specialized form of sonography utilizing Doppler
imaging to visualize the anatomy and function of the heart dimensionally,
as well as aurally, to monitor blood flow, verify normal and abnormal valve
function, echo patterns, etc. |
||
| ECHOCARDIOGRAPHIC PROCEDURES | ||
The
echocardiographer obtains images and measurements of the heart and great
vessels. The physician uses this information to make a diagnosis and recommend
treatment for the patient. |
||
| EMPLOYMENT | ||
|
Echocardiographers are employed in hospitals, clinics, and physician offices. They generally work a 5-day, 40-hour week that may include weekends. They may also be on call during the night and on weekends, depending upon place of employment. Echocardiographers spend a lot of time walking and standing. Employment of echocardiographers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2008. Growth will occur as the population ages, because older people have a higher incidence of heart problems. Advances in echocardiology technology will reduce the need for more costly and invasive procedures. |
||
| SALARIES | ||
| Median annual earnings of echocardiographers was $35,770 in 1998. The middle 50 percent earned between $29,060 and $42,350 a year. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $23,010 and the highest 10 percent earned more than $49,780 a year. | ||
