El Centro College, through its Food and Hospitality Services Institute, provides training through classroom instruction, hands-on participation and work-related experience for three different food service careers: Food and Hospitality Service, Chef Apprenticeship, and Bakery/Pastry Service. The metroplex's growing population and status as one of the nation's largest convention locales have resulted in the mushrooming of hotels and restaurants of all types, and there is currently a shortage of qualified food service personnel to staff these facilities.

The Food and Hospitality program trains students to take positions in any of a wide variety of food service positions; from a small coffee shop to a large hotel. The Chef Apprenticeship program provides the training necessary to become an executive chef who oversees the preparation of food in a restaurant, hotel or cafeteria. The Bakery/Pastry Certificate program trains individuals for bakeries, pastry shops, hotels, country clubs and in-store bakeries.

The food service curriculum was developed and is continuously monitored by an industry advisory committee composed of members of the Dallas Restaurant Association, Dallas Hotel and Motel Association, Dallas Chapter of the American Dietetic Association, the Lone Star Chapter of the Club Managers Association, the Texas Chefs Association and Retail Bakers of America.
