Introduction

The Radiologic Sciences program is a two-year, 72-credit-hour curriculum leading to the Associate Degree in Applied Sciences. A graduate of the program is eligible to take the national registry examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). If successful on the Registry Exam, the graduate is then eligible to be licensed by the Texas Department of State Health Services as a Certified Medical Radiologic Technologist.

Graduates of this program will generally find jobs in hospitals or imaging clinics. Hospitals operate 24/7, so weekend, evening, and night jobs tend to be the most available particularly for new graduates.

Radiologic Technologists are also able to obtain further education in other fields of imaging such as ultrasound and nuclear medicine. Potential positions available through cross-training include: computed tomography, mammography, interventional radiology, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Our Mission Statement

El Centro College Radiologic Sciences Program will provide an educational experience composed of didactic and clinical components that meets or exceeds the Standards of the profession as defined by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the Standards of the Joint Review Committeee on Education in Radiologic Technology. The Program fulfills the College's mission and provides the radiological community in the Greater Dallas area with a continual source of qualified, safe practioners.

Goals

Goal 1: Graduate students who will successfully complete all program requirements, meet entry-level expectations of employers, and successfully complete the ARRT national certification exam.

Goal 2: Graduate students with the ability to behave in a compassionate, ethical and professional manner

Goal 3: Develop graduates who will recognize the need for life-long learning in their chosen profession.

Goal 4: Develop applied skills in effective communication, critical thinking, and problem solving in the practice of the radiography profession.

Class Size

Each year, the Radiologic Sciences Program admits 20-25 students to its Radiography Program.

College Facilities

The Radiography program has three on-campus energized labs a computed radiography system, PACS system and a darkroom with a Kodak automatic film processor. There is also a comprehensive array of instructional tools, accessories and instruments, computers, and instructional software and quality control. The focus of these facilities is to provide students with opportunities for as many "hands-on" activities as possible. These activities assist the students in mastering radiographic procedures and in understanding the operation of the x-ray equipment. Ultimately, the students learn, through doing these activities, to ask "what if?" and "why not?", and then discover the answers through analysis and critical thinking.

Clinical Site Policy

A criminal background check and/or drug testing may be required prior to participation in the Radiography clinical component by the clinical site. Applicants, please be advised, the criminal check and/or drug testing is not a requirement of the college or radiography program. However, a student's progress to graduation would be limited by any inability to complete the clinical portion of the program due to a clinical site not allowing that student to be on its campus due to the results of the background check or drug screen. Programmatic hours are from 7 Am to 9 PM with possible clinical hours during days, evenings and weekends.
