Continuing/Workforce Education: Special Populations

Programs

El Centro College offers two classes specifically designed for students with developmental disabilities or mild mental retardation. These classes provide students with the opportunity to experience learning and social interaction in an age-appropriate environment and gain the skills necessary for the transition from school to work and the community.

Next Step
The Next Step program is designed for individuals with severe reading or learning disabilities particularly those making the transition from school to work. It introduces them to the expectations of employers, and teaches them how to retain employment. The class also teaches how to perform basic office-computer tasks, and works to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills. The class is a two semester long program that is offered in the Spring and Fall at $500 per semester. A job placement counselor also works with them in this period to help them to find work alternatives.

To qualify the student must be independent in activities of daily living, be able to either use public transportation or to arrange other transportation, be mature enough to handle being in the downtown areas, and have a minimum second grade reading level.

Moving On
The Moving On program is designed for individuals who have learning disabilities but read at a minimum of fifth grade level. The program works to improve basic work skills and computer skills in Microsoft Office, and works to improve basic academics, job seeking skills, and problem solving skills. The program is a two-semester class at $750 per semester and also includes working with a job placement counselor. Applicants must meet with the Program Director for an initial interview and approval to register.
