This course provides students with training on the very specific discipline within dispute resolution of arbitration.  Students are taught as neutral third parties, the discipline to hear and render decisions.  Arbitration is intended to avoid the formalities, delay, expense and uncertainty involved in ordinary litigation. Class meets May 16 (Thursday, 5-9pm) May 18 (Sat, 8-5p), May 19 (Sun 8-5p), May 23 (Thursday, 5-9p),May 25 (Sa, 8-5p) and May 26 (Sun 8-5p).

This is the foundation course for the Conflict Management Dispute Resolution Program at El Centro. It examines the nature of disputes and the multiple arenas in which conflict occurs. This course provides an overview of professional opportunities in dispute resolution studies such as mediation, arbitration and negotiation. Class meets May 30 (Thursday, 5-9pm) June 1 (Sat, 8-5p), June 2 (Sun 8-5p), June 6 (Thursday, 5-9p), June 8 (Sa, 8-5p) and June 9 (Sun 8-5p). Prerequisite: SOCI 2373 or DRCM 1372/DRCM 1072. Students obtain field experience conducting mediations, and dealing effectively with conflict management situations. They practice in-takes, role-play, develop marketing strategies, as well as other practical skills necessary to become a successful mediator and conflict resolver.   In addition to the seminars, students must do 32 hours of experiential activities as assigned by the instructor. Seminars Meets:  5:30-9:30pm on: 5/28, 6/18, 7/16, 8/6.

This course provides students with knowledge, skills, and strategies essential to apply the best theory and practices of conflict management in an education setting and with youth.  Through lecture, discussion, and role-plays, participants will gain greater understanding, knowledge, and skills for resolving conflict in education, including implementing peer mediation programs.  The use and abuse of social media and technology’s impact on youths and conflict are also included in the course.  Participants are introduced to the underlying models and practical skills involving mediation and conflict resolution in an educational setting. This course fulfills the requirements of Senate Bill 1436 for mediation training in Texas. This course exceeds the number of contact hours required training as a mediator for family disputes. Examines the issues involved in a divorce and meets the Texas training requirement in divorce mediation. Topics include child custody, support, and property.
