Skill development in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and universal precautions including vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture, and specimen collection on adults, children and infants.  Emphasis on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessing, professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. Topics include professionalism, ethics, and medical terminology. The curriculum is designed to provide the didactic information and competencies required by the American Society of Clinical Pathologist (ASCP) for certification as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician.
Prerequisites:  Completion of health records, including current immunizations and tuberculosis test, high school diploma or the equivalent (GED) and 10th grade reading level on TABE Test of Adult Basic Education. Proof of current AHA CPR Certification. (Textbook and liability insurance required). A criminal background and drug screening will be required for entry into the clinical, be prepared to complete screenings on the last day of class, specific instructions will be provided. You must have CE Academic Advisor approval for this course.

A health-related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by a clinical professional. This course is designed to provide the required clinical component to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician as established by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP). Participants will be assigned to a clinical laboratory for 120 contact hours to practice and demonstrate proficiency in the skills of venipuncture and capillary puncture. Clinical hours are scheduled with instructor according to the students needs and availability. All students must be flexible with clinical schedules, specific hospitals and schedules are not promised.

Prerequisite: Completion of the Phlebotomy Seminar with minimum grade of “C.” Enrollment is limited. A criminal background and drug screening will be required for entry into this class. You will be given specific information during lecture course. You must have CE Academic Advisor approval for this course.
