ABOUT OUR RETREAT

The Center for Formation in the Community College, in collaboration with the North Texas Community College Consortium, invites you to explore Formation in a retreat for educators. Formation is the term used in the writings of Parker J. Palmer for “the process of creating a quiet, focused, and disciplined space in which the noise within us and around us can subside and the voice of the inner teacher may be heard—space in which the external and internal powers of deformation are diminished and the grace and truth that are ours may regain their original form.”

The retreat will be facilitated by Ann Faulkner and Butch Owens.

Ann is Co-Director of the Center for Formation in the Community College (CFCC). She retired from a teaching career in Developmental Reading at Brookhaven College (including serving as Chairperson of the Dallas Community College District Faculty Association—twice!) to lead formation retreats for educators and to help with the development of the Dallas-based CFCC. She currently combines formation work with part-time retirement and a growing appreciation for life outside the city.

Butch is a Speech/Communications faculty member at Navarro College in Corsicana. He’s been conducting seminars, retreats, and workshops for twenty years; for the last five years this work has been concentrated in formation-related presentations. He’s a father, a camper/hiker, and a major source of fun.

The agenda will include time for solitude as well as work in small and large groups. Because formation activities focus on nurturing identity and integrity, they are always voluntary. The elements used to evoke the inner teacher may include poems, stories both personal and traditional, and music.

We begin Thursday, October 30 at 1:00; we conclude Friday, October 31 at 3:00.

We invite you to join us at Tanglewood October 30-31 for a rewarding and renewing personal and professional experience.
