| The TRIO
Student Support Services Program at El Centro College
offers services designed to help students:
- Stay in school
- Develop strong skills for academic success
- Prepare for graduation
- Prepare for transfer to a baccalaureate program
Services provided by the TRIO program include:
- One-on-one tutoring
- Academic advising with an assigned advisor
- Field trips to are universities
- Cultural activities
- Workshops
- Leadership development
- Mentoring
To be eligible for TRIO, students must be at least
one of the following:
- Low-income
- First generation college students
- Disabled
Upon application to the program, students are interviewed
to determine their level of academic need for services
and capacity/commitment to participate in services.
Full-time staff includes:
- Director (Sarah Oglesby)
- Tutor coordinator
- Advisor
- Math instructional Associate/Advisor
- Department Assistant
In addition, part-time tutors are employed and trained
each semester.
The TRIO staff at El Centro College believe their mission
is the empowerment of students. Because TRIO programs
are the result of President Johnson's "War on Poverty",
the program also seeks to transform campus culture to
create an institutional environment that is welcoming
and supportive of all students.
