Background: I have been at El Centro since the Fall semester in 2000, and have also served as an Associate Professor of History at the Spring Creek Campus of the Collin County Community College District since the Spring of 2004.
Style and Philosophy: I have a very laid back and casual classroom environment, conducive to student questions, discussion, and diverse views of historical concepts. My emphasis on United States history is political. In my courses we explore political movements - their development, causes and effects - as well as the clash of political ideologies between opposing forces. This line of teaching also allows room to spill over into other areas as well, such as constitutional, military, labor, and social history. Students who apply themselves will have an excellent understanding of the foundation and development of the United States, how the nation arrived where it is today, and the cost of freedom and what it means to be free.
My classes emphasize critical thinking and the ability to analyze historical concepts and ideas. My goal throughout any semester is not only to teach students history and provide a new sense of appreciation and understanding of the subject, but also improve critical thinking and individual analysis skills which ultimately benefit all students during and after their college career.
